Generation 2 of the direct line

Roque Luis Armando LERENA

Eldest son. PLACE FIELD CORRECTED 14 September 2026. This row's 'where found' held a CITATION - "SA records" - where the atlas expects a PLACE, so this person was missing from the map and appeared on it as a phantom location instead. The citation is kept here; the field now holds a real place. AND HE IS ON A UNION VOTERS' ROLL, found 9 October 2026 by a route this archive had never used. FamilySearch's FULL-TEXT search reads the words on unindexed images; the roll gives 'STEMDISTRIK POLLING DISTRICT NO. 770 ... 1491 Lerena, Roque Luis Armando', between Leibbrandt and Le Riche in a strictly alphabetical list. He was twenty to twenty-six across the years this roll covers. THESE ROLLS CARRY AN ADDRESS AND A TENURE - the same page's columns run Owner, Sole Tenant, Joint Tenant, Medehuurder - but the OCR cannot be aligned to the names, so his address needs the plate read by eye. A first-class lead on where he was living before Bloemfontein in 1932. AN ADDRESS, A TRADE AND A TENURE, 9 October 2026 - AND THE PLATE READ BY EYE BECAUSE THE OCR COULD NOT ALIGN THE COLUMNS. On a second roll of polling district 770 he is voter 1399 and the printed line reads 'Lerena, Roque Luis Armando ... 14 FLORENCE VILLAS ... FIREMAN ... O ... SOLE TENANT ... E'. HE IS THE SOLE TENANT OF HIS OWN ADDRESS AT ABOUT TWENTY-TWO. AND THE DISTRICT HAS A NAME NOW: one line of the same page carries 'Louis Botha Hostel, OBSERVATORY' and the street column runs Lower Main Rd, Trill Rd, Scott Rd, Arnold St and Salt River - so district 770 is OBSERVATORY and SALT RIVER, Cape Town. HIS FATHER WAS A HORSE-DEALER AND A TRAINER; HE WENT TO THE RAILWAY. The lines around his read Loco. Cleaner, Engine-driver, Signalman, Porter, Checker, Guard and Shunter, so 'Fireman' here is almost certainly a LOCOMOTIVE fireman - an inference from the company on the page, not from the word, which alone could mean a fire brigade.
