What is known

THE FATHER OF GIL LERENA, NAMED IN HIS SON'S MARRIAGE ACT OF 15 JANUARY 1845, FOUND 5 November 2026. The act (Iglesia Matriz, Montevideo; PLATE READ, the entry on the right-hand page; the end of the line is cut at the plate edge): 'Gil Llerena, natural de este Estado, hijo legitimo del finado Fidel Llerena y de Isidora Izaural[...], tambien de esta Republica; con Anastasia Santa Cruz, hija legitima de Gregorio, tambien finado, y Maria Gonzalez; testigos Rafael Quinones y Carmen Presentado'. So Fidel was dead by 15 January 1845 and Isidora's second surname is cut off by the plate edge (the machine and the baptisms of her grandchildren give Ysaurralde / Izaurralde; see her row). The baptism of Fermin Tomas (San Francisco de Asis, baptised the day of his birth, 29 December 1850; PLATE READ and zoomed, entry no. 261) repeats it: 'hijo legitimo de D. Gil [Llerena, the hand reads Serena] natural de esta Ciudad y de Anastasia Sta Cruz natural de S. Jose; abuelos paternos Fidel e Isidora Isaurrant[e]; maternos Gregorio y Maria Gonzalez; padrinos D. Fermin Ingle y Da Dolores Rodriguez'. Certified copies of both acts were issued on 15 October 1895 (marriage, ark 3:1:3Q9M-CS2Z-ZQSW-Z, book 9 folio 14; baptism, ark 3:1:3Q9M-CS2C-2SQX-2), machine text only. WHO HE WAS IS NOT SETTLED. The register holds one Fidel Lerena of the right age to be Gil's father, FIDEL LERENA FERNANDEZ (b. c.1799-1800 at Canelones, a son of Sancho Llerena Aguilar and Maria Fernandez; aged 12 in the 1812 padron), and the forename Fidel occurs nowhere else in Sancho's house. FOR: a rare forename in the one family; Gil was born in Montevideo (stated twice) where that Fidel lived in 1812. AGAINST OR OPEN: that Fidel would have been about nineteen or twenty at Gil's birth (about 1819); the tree gives him a death in 1822 that has not been found in the Montevideo burials; no act names Fidel's wife Isidora, and no baptism of Gil is held. Two other Fidel Lerenas are named in acts and are NOT this man's wife's husband on the evidence: a Fidel Lerena with Maria Ruedas (grandparents of Victor Lerena, Montevideo death of 1889) and a Fidel Lerena with Antolina Rodriguez (grandparents in a Cordon baptism of 1842). THIS ROW IS A CANDIDATE FOR IDENTIFICATION WITH FIDEL LERENA FERNANDEZ, NOT A MERGE, AND NO EDGE JOINS THEM; it is recorded as a candidate on /lines/ (data/lerena-lines-joins.tsv). What would settle it: Gil's baptism (Montevideo, about 1817-1821) or a marriage of Fidel and Isidora, either of which would name the parents. PLATE READ (the 1845 and 1850 acts). THREE FURTHER BAPTISMS NAME HIM AS GRANDFATHER, 5 November 2026 (all PLATE READ and zoomed): Maria Salome (31 October 1847, 'Abuelos paternos Fidel e Isidora Isaurral[de]'), Simon (19 November 1848, 'Fidel e Isidora Izaurral[de]') and Fermin Tomas (29 December 1850, 'Fidel e Isidora Isaurrant[e]'): four acts in all, with the marriage, name the same pair, so Fidel and Isidora are well attested as Gil's parents; THE ONLY OPEN QUESTION IS WHICH FIDEL.
