Don Clemente GARCIA (d. by 1794, Rosario)

The dead man whose estate RAMON LERENA was administering as Alcalde de la Santa Hermandad in November 1800. His widow is DONA CELESTINA GONZALEZ and the inventories concerned goods left 'en beneficio del menor'. THE WHOLE FILE IS NAMED FOR HIM, which is why a Lerena inside it was invisible to any index that catalogues by principal. Admitted 11 October 2026 under the rule written that day: a person named on an act this archive has read is a person in this register, whatever their role. HE WAS HER FIRST HUSBAND, and the estate was his. The court calls her 'viuda del finado Don Clemente Garcia' and the inventory concerns 'los bienes que por fin y muerte de su PRIMER CONSORTE quedaron a beneficio de su hijo menor'. SO HE DIED LEAVING ONE MINOR SON AND A WIDOW WHO REMARRIED BEFORE OCTOBER 1800. HE WAS OF THE COLLA, in the Banda Oriental, not of Buenos Aires - the file sits in a Buenos Aires court because the Juez de Menores of the capital had jurisdiction over the whole viceroyalty. THE INVENTORY SAYS WHAT HE WAS: A STOREKEEPER WITH A MILL. Read 11 October 2026. The first item appraised is 'un RANCHO de veinte y dos varas de largo, siete de ancho, con las paredes de PIEDRA, revocadas y blanqueadas de ambas partes, con CUATRO VIVIENDAS, la una de ellas compuesta de PULPERIA con mostrador, armazon y adyacentes, trastienda, sala y aposento'. Then a house of six doors, three with lock and fittings, and five windows, paved floor and corridors on both sides - 746 pesos; a stone-walled, thatch-roofed building of eleven varas by seven - 314 pesos; and 'una ATAHONA compuesta de casa, rueda, piedras, palo-fierro, linterna y demas utensilios' - a MILL - at 310 pesos. Then the tools: stone-picks, an adze, axes, a turned round table, benches, a pine chest, a crowbar, a spade, a hoe. SO THE MAN WHOSE ESTATE RAMON LERENA WAS SENT TO VALUE KEPT THE SHOP AND THE MILL OF HIS DISTRICT - which is also why the case was worth a court in Buenos Aires taking an interest in. HIS MINOR SON IS NEVER NAMED IN THE FRAMES READ, only ever 'su hijo menor'. HE DIED SIX YEARS EARLIER THAN THIS ROW'S NAME SAYS - BY 1794, NOT BY 1800. The 1794 file already calls him 'el finado Don CLEMENTE GARCIA' and already calls Celestina Gonzalez 'la viuda'. THE ROW'S OWN TITLE IS NOW WRONG AND IS LEFT UNCHANGED DELIBERATELY, because renaming a person changes their published address; see data/corrections.tsv and the slug ledger. AND HE HAD AN ESTANCIA AS WELL AS THE SHOP AND THE MILL. The 1794 inventory walks out to 'la ESTANCIA del finado' to count 'EL GANADO Y CABALLOS'. So the estate is a rural holding with stock, a store, a mill and a house - which is why it took two inventories six years apart and a court in the capital.
