Gilberto LERENA (Gilberto Justiniano LERENA LENGUAS)

Co-founder of the Argentine Stud Book; a Group 1 at Palermo renamed for him in 1914. A Lerena at the centre of Argentine thoroughbred breeding, in the right country at the right time - and PABLO ARMANDO TRAINED AND OWNED RACEHORSES. Born Montevideo 24 May 1855, died 8 December 1912. His father is now documented rather than asserted: his brother Luis Eugenio's marriage act of 19 December 1864 names their parents as Don Luis and Dona Justiniana Lenguas. That he and Luis Eugenio are BROTHERS still rests on published genealogy, not on an act, and is marked secondary on the charts. NO PROVEN LINK TO PABLO ARMANDO. HIS PARENTS ARE NOW NAMED, 13 September 2026: LUIS LERENA and JUSTINIANA LENGUAS. Two independent Uruguayan parish records, entered for two different children of his, both give his parents so. That makes him A BROTHER OF LUIS EUGENIO LERENA LENGUAS - the same Montevideo household that produced the one Lerena baptism in Rosario before 1879. The racing dynasty and the Rosario thread are the same family. THE IMAGE IS NOW OPENED, AND IT IS PRIMARY. Act 1447 of 31 October 1886 baptises his daughter Maria Angelica Julia, "hija legitima de Don Gilberto Lerena y de Dona Julia Salvanach, orientales", and names the paternal grandparents "Don LUIS y Dona JUSTINIANA LENGUAS" - the same couple named as Luis Eugenio's parents in his marriage act of 1864 and his death act of 1901. AND THE GODMOTHER IS DONA JULIA JUANICO DE LERENA - Luis Eugenio's own wife, standing at the font for her husband's brother's daughter. The two households are one family acting as one. Written by Martin Perez, the same priest who wrote act 1720 for Candido Jaime that year. AND A SECOND ACT, FROM A DIFFERENT PARISH, SAYS THE SAME, 14 September 2026: the baptism of his son Raul Alfredo Luis at the Catedral Basilica on 10 September 1885 gives "abuelos paternos: Luis y Justiniana Lenguas" and "abuelos maternos: Cristobal y Angela Alvarez" - identical to act 1447, in a different year, a different parish and a different priest's hand. Its godmother is a JOSEFA LERENA otherwise unknown to this archive. HIS HOUSEHOLD IS NOW ASSEMBLED, 14 September 2026: EIGHT CHILDREN by Julia Salvanach - Gilberto (1878), Carlos (1884), Raul Alfredo Luis (1885), Maria Angelica Julia (1886), all born at Montevideo; then Maria Carlota (1890), Luis Felipe (1892), Cesar Alberto (1896) and Horacio Alfredo (1898), at Buenos Aires. THE LAST MONTEVIDEO BAPTISM IS 31 OCTOBER 1886 AND THE FIRST BUENOS AIRES ONE 29 OCTOBER 1890, which brackets the family's crossing between those dates - firmer than the "1887 to 1889" this archive read off census birthplaces. AND JUAN CARLOS IS NOT AMONG THEM. AND THE 1895 CENSUS SCHEDULE, READ AS A HOUSEHOLD FOR THE FIRST TIME ON 14 September 2026, GIVES HIM A TRADE: CORREDOR DE COMERCIO - a commercial broker, aged 41, casado, R. Oriental, catolico. This archive has had him as a breeder, which is what he is remembered for; in his own house he told the enumerator he was a broker.

What has been read about this person

HIS PARENTS, OFF THE PAGE RATHER THAN OFF A TREE. "el matrimonio que por palabras de presente contrajo Don GILBERTO LERENA, Oriental, soltero, hijo legitimo de Don LUIS y de Dona JUSTINIANA LENGUAS: con [Julia] SALVANACH, del propio estado y nacionalidad, e hija de Don CRISTOBAL y de Dona ANGELA ALVAREZ" - padrinos "Don LUIS LERENA y Dona ANGELA ALVAREZ". He is 'Oriental, soltero' - Uruguayan and a bachelor - and the third banns were dispensed by Don Jacinto Vera, Vicario Apostolico. THE MACHINE INDEX OF THIS SAME ACT IS WRONG ABOUT THE BRIDE: it gives her a father called 'Cristobal LERENA'. The page shows Cristobal is a SALVANACH, her own father, and the surname Lerena was carried across from the padrino line. There is no Cristobal Lerena.
