Jose Dolores LERENA y LERENA (of Navarrete, Logrono)

The brother who STAYED. 'Don Jose Dolores Leerena y Lerena, CASADO y PROPIETARIO, vecino de Navarrete' - named with his mother in the 1900 power of attorney to administer, let, mortgage, sell and if need be litigate over the family's property in Spain. HE IS THE ONE WITH THE LAND AND THE WIFE; HIS BROTHERS WERE SHOP-ASSISTANTS ACROSS AN OCEAN - which is the ordinary shape of a Riojan trading family and the likeliest explanation of the stream of young LERENA men out of Logrono into Buenos Aires commerce in this archive's CEMLA extracts: Martin at 14 in 1907, Jose M. at 16 in 1909, Jose at 16 in 1924, Emilio and Jose Maria in 1930. A LINE OF THE NAME THAT IS NOT THIS FAMILY'S LINE, drawn so it stops being mistaken for one. THIS HOUSEHOLD IS WHY THE ROW MATTERS MORE THAN ITS OWN PEOPLE DO. The brothers sign themselves LERENA y LERENA, so their father was a Lerena AND their mother was a Lerena - and Pablo Armando Lerena's 1908 enrolment card names JUAN CARLOS LERENA and MARIA LERENA. AND THEY ARE THE SIXTH SUCH COUPLE THIS ARCHIVE HAS MET, NOT THE FIRST - a correction to what was written here first. The two Trinidad couples of 1894 and 1913, the 1911 dispensation, Alejandro, and Eloy x Felisa Lerena at San Jose de Flores in 1912 all came before them. SO THE CARD'S DOUBLE SURNAME WAS NEVER IN REAL DOUBT, AND NAVARRETE DOES NOT RESCUE IT. What Navarrete adds is different and smaller: it is the FIRST SUCH HOUSEHOLD OUTSIDE SOUTH AMERICA, the FIRST WHERE THE CHILDREN CARRY IT DOUBLED AS A SURNAME OF RECORD - 'Lerena y Lerena', in their own signatures, not just a coincidence of two parents - and the FIRST TIME THE PRACTICE HAS A PLACE ON A MAP that can be searched. No link to Pablo Armando is claimed - see data/open-questions.tsv. AND WITHIN THE HOUR HE TURNED UP AGAIN, IN SPAIN, FOUR YEARS EARLIER, HOLDING AN OFFICE. A Madrid pension file of 1896 carries a certificate signed 'D. JOSE DOLORES LERENA Y LERENA, JUEZ MUNICIPAL SUPLENTE DE ESTA VILLA, encargado de la Jurisdiccion por ausencia del propietario, Y TAMBIEN [DEL] REGISTRO CIVIL DE LA MISMA'. He certifies an entry from his own book: 'Que en dicho Registro, seccion de DEFUNCIONES, al folio CIENTO NOVENTA Y UNO del tomo [undecimo] se encuentra el acta que dice asi' - the death at Navarrete on 11 NOVEMBER 1895 of Juan Manuel Chavarri Oteyza of Fuenmayor, aged seventy. SO HIS BROTHERS' 'CASADO Y PROPIETARIO' IN 1900 UNDERSTATES HIM: he was the acting magistrate of the town and the man who kept its civil register. THE PEOPLE IN THAT DEATH ACT ARE DELIBERATELY NOT IN THIS REGISTER - not Clemente Huergo, not Chavarri Oteyza, not the judge Jose Maria Briones y Briones, not the secretary Florencio Velasco de la Plaza. He is the official of record and they are the business of his office, which is the boundary in tools/check-people-named.py - and it is the SECOND time in two days that boundary has been applied to a Lerena keeping a register, the first being VICENTE LERENA DIAZ, Jefe del Registro Civil of Pueblo Brugo, Entre Rios, 1938. THREE MEN OF THIS NAME NOW HOLD A REGISTER OR A JURISDICTION IN THREE COUNTRIES: Ramon Lerena, Alcalde de la Santa Hermandad del Partido del Rosario, 1796-1800; Jose Dolores Lerena y Lerena, juez municipal and registrar of Navarrete, 1895-96; Vicente Lerena Diaz at Pueblo Brugo, 1938. NO CONNECTION IS CLAIMED BETWEEN THEM AND THERE IS NO REASON TO THINK ONE EXISTS - a village needs a literate man and these are three different villages a hemisphere apart. It is recorded because it is the kind of coincidence this archive would otherwise mistake for a pattern later, having forgotten it noticed it. WHAT IT OPENS: the Juzgado Municipal of Navarrete kept DEFUNCIONES in numbered volumes - tomo 11 reached folio 191 by November 1895 - so the civil register of the village where Lerenas married Lerenas exists and is described. See data/open-questions.tsv, question 1.
